Although we can’t blog about absolutely everything, we still like to keep abreast of the news – so starting from today, we’re going to write a short piece collecting news that has interested us over the past week. If you’ve got anything you think we should be reading, or writing about – please let us know in the comments, or on twitter.
With all of these links, they are not CCK content, and do not necessarily express the views of CCK (we just think they’re interesting). Content may not be suitable for under-18s, workplace viewing, or be particularly kinky.
The Association of Chief Police Officers has called for an overhaul of the UK’s prostitution laws in order to protect sex workers [The Independant, BBC, Harlot’s Parlour].
Douglas Fox from Harlot’s Parlour on how you can help the proposed review of best practice with relation to sex work.
Do you use boy words or girl words? [Thoughts ON].
A review of new Queer Feminist sex zine Salacious [Filament].
Beyond Male and Female: the biology of who we are [The Daily Kos].
Pandora Blake from Spanked, Not Silenced, Dr Petra Boynton, and Abel from The Spanking Writers on the proposed opt-in “porn block”.
Your inner feminist should be happy [Rakoon, Mirkwood]
What 2011 will hold for the law and sexuality [Chris Ashford – Law and Sexuality].
I hope everyone is having a good holiday break, whether or not you’re celebrating anything, and wherever you are. At CCK, we’ve taken the holiday period off for some well-deserved rest and recharging of batteries, so we’ll be ready to go with all our new plans come the 3rd of January 2011. Goodness. 2011 – it seems like it should be years away, not the weekend.
A wonderful time was had by all who came to the party last wednesday – by CCK staff, familiar faces, and some new friends. Much cake was eaten; once everyone had moved the party out of the office, we were left with only one slice (ed: I ate it, it was lovely – Emma). The raffle of the goodie bags was a great success, and we were left with a lovely positive christmassy glow. Unless that was the after-effect of drinking our Peter’s coffee and overdosing on glittering chocolate cake. A massive thank you to everyone who came!
If you didn’t manage to make it to the party, we would love to see you – give us a ring, or get hold of us on twitter, and make an appointment to come in for a chat with one of our personal shoppers. We’re always happy to meet our customers face to face – it reminds us of the fun at Endell Street.
We’ll see you in the New Year! Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
It’s been a long time coming…and there are a few more creases to be ironed out…but the infamous law with regard to military service in US has been repealed. We’ll mark it here in the blog with an appropriate symbol…something that shows a little of the back of DADT. Don’t Harrass
The Fourth Nordic Open is an alternative to the norm that is both Gender Fabulous and Strictly Scandanavian style. Watch the competing couples samba, twist and crawl…then attend the Ball on New Year’s Day. How Lovely! Dance
There are a number of things that could be said about the campaign (launched today) by eight couples who want their relationships (as well as their identidies) recognised in law. I’ll pick just one thing… my dictionary descibes a ‘civil marriage’ as a ceremony without the religious apects. If that’s so…then shouldn’t it be available for same sex and both sex couples? European Court Launch
We’re throwing our office open from 5pm on Wednesday the 22nd of December for a last-minute come-and-indulge christmas shopping party. We’ve got a huge cake in, lots of coffee, and plenty of purchaseable delights (including the christmas cards you’ve forgotten to buy). There will be a raffle for some rather lovely top-secret goodie bags – and, obviously, us.
We’d love to see you.
The facebook event is here – rsvp if you can, so we can make sure there’s enough milk for the coffee. If you don’t want to rsvp on facebook, send an email to emma.s[at]coffeecakeandkink[dot]com (or a dm to @coffeecakekink on twitter) – this is so we know how many people are coming, and can make a wee guest list for the office building managers.
If you can’t make it to the party, but need last-minute goodies, order online tomorrow for last-minute special courier delivery – or call if you would like to speak to a personal shopper, or grab the last of our office appointments for some one-on-one CCK love.
Two shows of Gay Comedy by Marga Gomez: laughs and balloons to be had, for sure. The rhino!
There has been a steady rise in activity for the variety of entertainments listed under the term of ‘burlesque’. Good news, you might think, from local reviews of such things as La Soiree and La Clique Even better news for those of you who like a little sassy glam in your knicker drawer.
Now there’s a movie from Hollywood…and a soundtrack to boot. Christina Aguilera and Cher are a dream coupling that will guarantee a mainstream audience for the film, and there’s added interest with roles for Stanley Tucci and Alan Cumming. But Aguilera’s the lead character, and this is her first major movie assignment. Will she reveal a presence every bit as large as her music videos or CDs?
This video of “I’m a good girl” from the movie starring Christina Aguilera has certainly got the team grinning, and we’re looking forward to seeing if the rest of the film is as good!
Competition time! Here’s a picture of Cher and Christina on set. But what exactly is Miss Aguilera saying? And is it printable? Best caption as judged by the team (put it in the comments) wins a CCK goodie bag! The goodie bag contains some FYI chocolates, a few seasonal cards, and a special something from our shop.
Burlesque is released in UK cinemas on Friday; we suggest checking your local listings.
I’ve only just found out about this, but it looks like great fun. Wotever World is holding a special Queer Craft Xmas Fayre Car Boot Sale from midday on the 18th of December (so this saturday) at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, 372 Kennington Lane, London, SE11 5HY (google map link). Stallholders will be selling clothes, fetishwear, collectables, and lots of handmade crafty goodies.
Even more excitingly, our resident web queen, Alison, will be there with her crafty arty goodies under the name I like the word NAUGHTY – some of her goodies are already available through CCK, but this looks like too much fun to miss! Pop down and say hi to Alison, have a last minute shop – and maybe run into a few more of the CCK team.
Gift tags from I like the word NAUGHTY
Each week, we ask one member of our team to pick which toy (or painting, or book) they most love – this is Katie’s.
I tend to love Fun Factory’s toys and the Layaspot is no exception. The colourful, funky shaped stuff is often cute enough to leave lying around without embarrassment – I’ve mistaken a buttplug for a piece of art before! – and they pack in a mean bit of excitement as well. The Layaspot has multi-speed vibration and three pulsation modes, and like the rest of Fun Factory’s products it is made from high quality hypoallergenic material. In all, it’s a really exciting little toy and well worth the cost. I personally think the silver/black is the most stylish, but it comes in a bunch of colours so have a browse around!
